Wyre Forest schools below national average in GCSE results

WYRE Forest schools have improved their GCSE results but remain below the national average according to school performance table figures released yesterday.

The percentage of pupils in the district who achieved five or more A* to C GCSE grades including English and mathematics - the government’s benchmark - was 53 per cent for 2011.

Despite being up from 49 per cent in 2010, it is below the national average of 58.9 per cent and the Worcestershire average of 60.1 per cent.

The district was also the worst performing in the county below Redditch at 54 per cent. Malvern Hills was the highest performing with 68 per cent.

Individually, Holy Trinity School in Kidderminster and Heathfield School in Wolverley were the highest performing schools.

Wolverley CofE Secondary School and Baxter College were the district’s lowest performing schools.

King Charles I Secondary School saw its results improve from 50 per cent in 2010 to 60 per cent in 2011. The number of pupils taking GCSEs at the school was 209 with an average points score per pupil of 442.5.

Deputy headteacher Geraint Roberts said: “We are very pleased with the results. It is an endorsement of the success and all the hard work we have been doing.”

The Stourport High School and Sixth Form Centre saw its results rise from 55 per cent in 2010 to 63 per cent of 208 candidates in 2011. The school’s average points score stood at 428.3.

The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre saw 177 pupils take their GCSEs. 65 per cent achieved the government’s benchmark and pupils scored an average of 460.5 points.

Baxter College saw another rise, from 40 per cent in 2010 to 46 per cent in 2011 with 169 pupils sitting. The school’s average points score per pupil was 510.3.

Wolverley CofE Secondary School saw 143 pupils taking GCSEs in 2011. The percentage of pupils achieving five or more A* to C GCSEs including English and mathematics was 36 per cent, down from 41 per cent the year before. Its average points score was 427.9.

Independent Heathfield School entered 31 pupils with 94 per cent achieving the benchmark and a points average of 416.6.

Holy Trinity School’s saw a result of 71 per cent. 24 students took their GCSEs at the school which received an average points score of 489.6.

Jane Potter, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for education and skills, said the county’s results were “extremely encouraging”.

“It is a credit to the hard work of all the students and those who have supported them that another year of steady improvements has been achieved in schools throughout Worcestershire," she added.
