Vincent strikes to seal success

2:00pm Friday 27th January 2012

STOURPORT Hockey Club's Ladies returned to action with a 2-1 friendly win over Kettering at home.

There was a rough and tumble start to the game but Stourport managed to take control thanks to the dominance of Sarah Cavendish and Katie Miller in the middle of the park Lora Symonds went close to opening the scoring with some exciting solo runs, while Sade Gerald saw a shot well saved by the keeper.

Symonds then crossed for Jade Marshall-Walker but she failed to make contact at the far post, as the game remained goalless at the break.

Kettering came out for the second-half looking to grasp the initiative and Stourport were indebted to some good defending from Harriet Burns for keeping the scores level.

The hosts began to create chances again and Symonds finally broke the deadlock from the edge of the D, following a nice team move.

Soon after Jodi Vincent bagged a second after being fed by Symonds and despite Kettering pulling a goal back late on, it was Stourport who claimed the victory.

This weekend the unbeaten table-toppers travel to Aldridge (noon) as the Midlands Premier League resumes.

Bethan Merriman scored twice as the seconds drew 2-2 with Solihull Blossomfield, though there was disappointment for the thirds who were soundly beaten 4-0 by Badsey.

Stourport fourths recorded a 1-0 win over Worcester thirds in their final friendly before the league programme resumes.

Rosie Connolly fired home the only goal of the game in the second-half, after collecting a pass from Teresa Moss.

The fifths were beaten 2-0 by Worcester fourths despite a fine display by keeper Gemma Robinson.

This Saturday the seconds head to Shrewsbury (11am) with the thirds at home to Worcester seconds (2.30pm).

The fourths go to Kidderminster (11.30am), while the fifths host Old Sils (10am).
