Lewis bags hat-trick as unbeaten run goes on
2:00pm Thursday 2nd February 2012
HOCKEY: Pippa Lewis scored a hat-trick as Stourport Ladies hammered seven without reply past Aldridge and Walsall.
In the first round of Midland Premier League games since the winter break, table-toppers Stourport preserved their unbeaten record in emphatic style.
However, the first-half was largely one of frustration as Stourport found it hard to break down the hosts’ disciplined defence.
Sade Gerald, Lora Symonds and Pippa Lewis all went close before the deadlock was finally broken as Lewis converted a penalty flick.
With the pressure lifted and Gerald added a second before the break. It was a sign of things to come as the second-half turned into a goal frenzy.
Jodi Vincent set-up Lewis to smash home the third and then put in Jade Marshall-Walker for goal number four.
Vincent was then rewarded for her hard work with the fifth as she calmly flicked a rebound over the grounded keeper, before grabbing a second with a great strike which rounded off a sparkling team move.
Lewis finished things off with her hat-trick goal, drilling home after being played in by Symonds.
The Ladies are back in action this Saturday when they host third-placed Beeston (11.30am).
There was disappointment for the seconds, who suffered a 4-2 defeat at Shrewsbury.
Fran Morris gave them the perfect start with a goal after five minutes and Bethan Merriman was also on target in a first-half which ended 2-2.
But Shrewsbury upped their game in the second period to take the victory.
The third XI also secured an early lead in their game with Worcester seconds but ended up on the wrong end of a 9-3 scoreline.
Stourport went 3-1 up at one stage in the first period thanks to Alison Baron’s opener and a brace from Abbie Yapp.
However, it was all downhill from there as Worcester pulled level at the break and stormed away with it in the second-half.
There was similar disappointment for the fourth XI who were beaten 4-0 by Kidderminster.
The fifths suffered defeat by the same scoreline against Old Silhillians seconds.
This Saturday the seconds travel to Shrewsbury seconds (11am), while the third XI are also away at Badsey (noon).
The fourths host Worcester thirds (11.30am) with the fifth team away at Tenbury (noon).
